Stiftung Warentest: toaster in extreme test
Stiftung Warentest had high demands in the toaster test: brown but not too dark, evenly crispy and not flabby and the finished toast is best still easy to remove. 17 devices had to be measured, including cheap toasters for 15 euros and luxury devices for high-priced 126 euros. Another device turned out to be the "best toaster".
Stiftung Warentest is looking for the best toast
From cheese-white to kohlrabenschwarz - everything was included in the 04/2016 toaster test. The Krups KH 442 makes by far the best toast:
- The Krupp KH 442 tops the toaster ranking at Warentest with a grade of 1.9 ("Good"). But what makes this great toast? According to the experts, the tanning is particularly even. You can also defrost and bake rolls very well. Price: about 50 euros.
- There are also small restrictions for the test winner: the degree of roasting can only be adjusted approximately using the controller. It also takes about two and a half minutes to brown the toast. Other toasters have long since been ready.
2nd place in the toaster test: Cheap & good alternatives
- If the test winner is too expensive for you, you should take a look at the Braun HT 550. For about 30 euros you can set the degree of toasting very precisely and the toast is ready exceptionally quickly. He comes in second place with a grade of 2.4.
- The Tefal TT 3650 is on the same level for just under 35 euros. Here the toasts get almost the same browning as the test winner. When warming up, it is in no way inferior to the top model, only when defrosting and baking bread rolls is it referred to second place. But he is a bit faster than the lame test winner.

Cheap toasters barely miss a "good"
If you are looking for cheap toasters for less than 20 euros, you cannot avoid the Severin AT 2287:
- It is the best toaster in the low-price segment, according to Warentest. The tan is mediocre with the Severin toaster, but from level 3 they get much too dark. Therefore only the first two levels can be used. Unfortunately, the 16-euro toaster lacks a defrost and bake function, but you can still put on bread rolls and bake at a higher setting. In the end it is enough for the grade 2.6 ("satisfactory").
- All cheaper toasters failed the test, such as the Alaska TA 2209N from Real and the OK OTO 103, which is offered by MediaMarkt and Saturn. Both toasters cost only 15 euros, but the test showed serious shortcomings in security or processing.
Buying a toaster: how to find the right model
There are a few things to consider when choosing the right toaster:
- Is a toaster with two slots enough or do you have a large family? The test toasters listed above are not made for larger families. Instead, we recommend the four-slot toaster from TZS First Austria.
- Which functions do you really need? If you only want to bake crispy slices of toast, the Severin toaster AT 2287 is sufficient (grade 2.6 in the test). If, on the other hand, you also defrost and bake bread, it is best to choose the Braun HT 550 (one slot) or the Tefal TT 3650 (two slots).
