With a silent SMS, your smartphone is located by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. You can usually not recognize the silent SMS. Because you receive neither an acoustic signal nor a notification. Nevertheless, you can take precautions to recognize a silent SMS.
Detect silent SMS - will I be monitored?
- From January to June 2018, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Germany sent more than 100, 000 silent SMS. This emerges from a request from the party Die Linke to the federal government. There are almost twice as many text messages as four years ago. There are also around 40, 000 silent SMS messages from the Federal Police and around 30, 000 silent SMS messages from the Federal Criminal Police Office.
- With a silent SMS (also silent SMS or stealth ping), the constitution protection agency can find out the whereabouts of the smartphone owner without noticing it.
- The location is not accurate to the meter, but refers to the cell phones in which the cell phone dials. Nevertheless, detailed motion profiles can be created with this method.

You can only prevent a silent SMS from being received if the smartphone is switched off and the battery and SIM card are removed. But there is an app that shows you when you receive silent SMS:
- The free Android app SnoopSnitch shows you when you have received a silent SMS. Unfortunately, there is no such thing for iOS.
- However, it is still unclear who exactly sent you the silent SMS. But you will probably never know that unless one day the constitutional protection or the police are at the door.
- Even if criminals pretend to be radio masts and in reality only want to skim off data and conversations (so-called IMSI catchers), the app warns you of this.
