Set up search engines in the browser - how it works
In this practical tip, we show you how you can set up your favorite search engines with three different browsers.
Set up search engine on Google Chrome
We'll show you how to set up your favorite search engine in the Google Chrome browser.
- Click on the three lines at the top right and then select "Settings".
- Now go to the "Search" heading and select the "Manage search engines" item. Compare the screenshot.
- In the window that opens, select a suitable search engine or define one yourself by scrolling down and entering the search engine including the abbreviation and URL in the fields provided.
Set up search engine in Mozilla Firefox
Here's how to set up your favorite search engine with Mozilla Firefox:
- Just type "about: config" in the address bar without the quotes. You will then see a warning message in the browser, as you can see on the screenshot. Click on "I'll be careful, I promise!"
- The cursor is now in the "Search" line in the updated window. Enter "browser.search.defaultenginename" there also without quotation marks.
- Then double click on the bold and only result in the search bar.
- At this point, simply enter the name of the desired search engine. Important: Only enter the name, not the URL. Then confirm with "OK".
Set up search engine in Internet Explorer
With Internet Explorer you set up your search engine as follows:
- Click the gear in the top right and then select "Manage Add-ons". Now go to "Search Provider" on the left.
- Click on the "Find more search providers" link in the lower area.
- In the window that opens you can find very different search providers. Select your suitable search engine by clicking on it and then clicking on the yellow box with "Add to Internet Explorer".
- You can then choose whether you want to set this search engine as the default search provider and whether you want to use the provider's search suggestions. Then click on "Add".
- If your search engine is not yet active, follow point 1 again. In the area on the right you should now see other search engines that are above your desired search provider. Right-click on this and remove it. The search is only activated when your provider is at the top.
Tip: In another practical tip, we present child-safe search engines so that even the smallest can search safely on the Internet.
