Supercomputer ranking: These are the fastest computers in the world
The fastest supercomputers in the world are regularly ranked. Here you can find out which computers have made it into the top 5 and which place Germany ends up in.
Supercomputer ranking: This is what they are needed for
Supercomputers carry out various calculations that require enormous computing power.
- These include, for example, simulations in quantum mechanics, climate calculations, fusion research or calculations for medical-biological applications.
- In addition, nuclear weapons research and cryptanalysis are also carried out with the supercomputers. In Germany, you therefore fall under the law of arms export control.
- The high performance Linpack benchmark is the standard test for the supercomputers.
1st place: Supercomputer Summit - USA
- "Summit" was built by IBM and is located in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States.
- The supercomputer is built with a proud 2, 397, 824 cores based on Power9 CPUs and Nvidia's V100 GPUs.
- These ensure a maximum computing power of 143.5 petaflops.
2nd place: Sierra - USA
The second-placed supercomputer is also in the United States.
- "Sierra" calculates in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
- The output is 94.6 petaflops with 1, 572, 480 cores.
- Power9 CPUs from IBM and Nvidia's V100 GPUs are also used here.
3rd place: Sunway TaihuLight - China
