Connect Surfstick to Chromebook - is that possible?
This practical tip will tell you whether you can connect a surf stick to the Chromebook and use it to surf the Internet without the integrated 3G module.
Use a surf stick on the Chromebook
The practical thing about surfsticks is that all the necessary drivers are already preinstalled. You just have to insert the stick and you can start surfing in a few minutes. Unfortunately, this is different with Google’s Chromebooks.
- The Internet providers generally only support the Windows and Mac OS operating systems.
- However, drivers for Chrome OS are not stored on the surfsticks.
- It is therefore not possible to connect a surf stick to a Chromebook as long as the Chrome OS operating system is installed. But it still works via a detour - for example, by installing Ubuntu on your Chromebook.
Alternative: With a mobile WiFi router on the net
If your Chromebook does not have a built-in modem, you can use a mobile WiFi router to connect your laptop to the web on the go.
- An example device is the TP-Link 5350, which brings your Chromebook to the Internet at lightning speed via WiFi.
- Insert a SIM card with data flat into the router to establish an Internet connection.
- You can then pair the Chromebook with the router via WLAN and then surf the Internet.
- Practical: Some WLAN routers come with a microSD card slot and can also be charged on their Chromebook via a USB connection.
