Synology Drive: How it Works
Synchronizing PCs and laptops with the DiskStation is no big deal. These steps make it easy:
- Open the web interface of your DiskStation and log in. You can find further information in another article.
- Open the package center, search for the "Drive" package and install it. If you are asked to install other programs as well, simply press "Yes" and your DiskStation will do the rest for you.
- After installation, two new programs appear in the app overview: Drive and the Drive Admin console. First, start the admin console to set everything up.
- Here you can first see the system status. In the bar on the left you can click through all options. First press “Team folder” to release directories for synchronization.
- To do this, mark the relevant folder and press »Activate« above the list. You can then choose how many versions of the folder you want to keep. This function is useful so that accidentally deleted or edited files are not immediately lost and changes can be undone. Then press OK to share the folder.
- Then make sure in the Control Panel under »Common Folders«> »Edit« that all required users have access to the share.
- Then download Synology Drive to the desired device. You can find the app for Android and iOS in the respective store, Windows users must download the program from the download center.
- Log in to Synology Drive with a user who has access to the appropriate folders. Then create a new synchronization task by selecting the folder on DiskStation and a local folder.
- Finally, you can specify which file types should be synchronized and choose between one-way and two-way sync. Now the data synchronization starts automatically. On your Windows computer, you can see the progress in the task bar at the bottom left.
