Synology: Forgot Password - You Can Do It
If you want to access the data of your Synology NAS, you need the corresponding administrator password. If you forget this, you must first restore the network hard drive and create a new password. We show you two ways of getting your data back.
Synology-NAS: Recover forgotten password
Before resetting your password, you need to start the NAS. You can also access Synology Assistant for security. Make sure your server is in the Status section in Ready mode.
- Then look for the reset button on the back of your NAS. The exact location can be found either in the instructions for your server or on the Synology website.
- With an open paper clip or similar pointed object, press and hold the reset button for about four seconds.
- When your NAS beeps, release the button.
- Finally, start the Synology Assistant and double click on your NAS. Use "admin" as the user name and leave the password field blank. Now you can reconfigure the administrator password and the network settings.
Alternatively: Reinstall Synology firmware and reset password
Instead of just resetting the network configuration, you can reload the entire firmware. However, all data will be lost. So only carry out these steps if problems occur with the first variant.
- Use a paper clip to hold the reset button again for about four seconds until the NAS beeps.
- Release the button briefly. Then press and hold the button again for four seconds within the next 10 seconds.
- Another beep sounds and the status LED on the front of your Synology glows orange.
- Start Synology Assistant and find your NAS. Under "Status" you will find the entry "Configuration lost".
- If you double-click on the entry, the setup wizard starts. Follow the installation instructions to set up Synology firmware again. You can also set a new password here.
