Clear system cache under Mac OS - Here's how
If your Mac is slow and jerky, it sometimes helps to clear the system cache. Read in this practical tip how this works.
Clear MacOS system cache
Many systems have a cache that can also be cleared manually. In this practical tip, we explain what advantages this can bring. Below you can read how this works on macOS.
- To empty the system cache you have to delete the folders "System / Library / Caches" and "Library / Caches". If you want to empty the user cache in addition to the system cache, you must also delete the "~ / Library / Caches" folder. To do this, however, you have to display hidden folders. In all of these processes, you must verify yourself as an administrator.
- After you delete the folders, you should restart your Mac. Please note, however, that restarting and opening programs (if you have deleted the user cache) now takes longer because the cache must first be rebuilt.
- In general, you shouldn't clear your cache too often. The MacOS system creates it to start programs and apps faster. If you move the folder due to space or the like. delete, it will be the same size again after using the Mac.
- Deleting the cache folder is only recommended if some programs or even the entire system is unstable or slow or jerky.
