Unzip tar.gz files - how it works
Similar to RAR files, files with the "tar.gz" extension are so-called archive files. This practical tip shows you how to unpack them.
tar.gz: Extract files under Windows
- Download the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Winrar suitable for your system.
- Open the EXE file and follow the installation instructions.
- After installation, WinRar should automatically recognize the tar.gz files. Just double click on the file. If WinRar does not open automatically, right-click on the file, select "Open with", "Other program" and then WinRar.
- When WinRar has opened, click on the "Entp. Nach" item in the top bar.
- Then click "OK" to extract the tar.gz file.
Unzip tar.gz files on Linux
If you want to unpack a tar.gz file under Linux, you do not need any additional software.
- Open the console of your operating system.
- Use the cd command to change to the folder in which the tar.gz file is located.
- Enter the command "tar -xvzf NAMEDERDATEI.tar.gz" and confirm it by pressing the Enter key. Of course you have to change the name of the file. Then the file is extracted into a subfolder.
