Change taskbar: These settings exist
Everyone knows the Windows taskbar. Few people know what you can change. We show which settings you can make to adapt the taskbar to your needs.
Windows taskbar: change position
The taskbar in Windows is traditionally fixed at the bottom of the screen. However, you can change this:
- Right-click on your taskbar and select "Properties".
- In the "Taskbar" tab you can select the arrangement of the taskbar via "Position of the taskbar on the screen". The following are available: Top, Bottom, Left and Right.
- If the taskbar is in your way more often or you want to change the position quickly every now and then, uncheck the "Fix taskbar" setting. You can now drag the task bar to an empty position on the task bar at the desired screen edge and thus change the position with a single click.
- You also have the option of adjusting the width of the taskbar by dragging the desired width on the edge of the taskbar. The cursor then changes to a double-sided arrow.

Windows taskbar: change behavior and appearance
In addition to the position, you can also change some settings for the behavior and design of the Windows taskbar:
- With the setting "Automatically hide taskbar", the taskbar automatically moves out of the screen after a few seconds. You can then call it up again by moving the cursor to the taskbar at the edge of the screen.
- If the taskbar in the thinnest setting still takes up too much space, you can reduce the icon size of the taskbar. To do this, check the "Use small buttons on the taskbar" checkbox.
- You can display the application names that have been hidden since Windows 7 by setting the "Taskbar buttons" to "Never group" or "Group when taskbar is full". Then the name is displayed to the right of the symbols.
- With the "Aero Peek" function, you can have the desktop displayed by moving the mouse pointer over the desktop display button. Your windows will then be shown in glass.
- You can use the "Customize ..." button to change which symbols are displayed permanently on the right in the notification area and which should be hidden. There you can set the behavior of the symbols by right-clicking.
- If you have multiple monitors connected to your PC, you can also set whether and what the taskbar should display on the second monitor. To do this, change the settings in the "Multiple displays" box. By the way, the setting on which screen edge the taskbar is to be displayed applies equally to all monitors.
