Create Terraria server - how it works
To play Terraria in multiplayer, you first need to create a server. We show you how this works in this practical tip.
Create Terraria server: the software
If you want to play Terraria with your friends, you need a VPN outside of a LAN network that you can use to play.
- The classic Hamachi and the newcomer Tunngle are ideal for creating and using such a VPN. We advise you to use the free Tunngle software.
- Once you have created or selected your own VPN, you can start Terraria and create the server.
Instructions: Create a Terraria server
You can create a Terraria server both in Terraria itself and via the "start-server.bat" file. You can find them in the main directory of Terraria. Here we show you how to create the server in the game.
- Start Terraria and click on "Host & Play" in the "Multiplayer" category.
- Then choose a character and a world. You can also create new ones on request.
- Optionally enter a password and click on "Accept". The server is then created.
- Your friends can now also join the server from the multiplayer menu. All you need is the IP that you received via the VPN software.
- Note: If you are playing over a LAN network, you do not need an IP, but the command "localhost".
