ThinkPad: Update BIOS - how it works
You can update the BIOS of your ThinkPad using a utility. We show you where to get the software and how to use it correctly. If the utility does not work, you can update the BIOS manually. Instructions are provided below.
Thinkpad: Update BIOS with Lenovo utility
You can update your BIOS using the Lenovo utility:
- First you should back up your data and make a backup. We'll show you how in a further article.
- Open this Lenovo support page.
- Under Laptops, select the model name of your ThinkPad. You will usually find the model name on the right below the screen.
- Download the appropriate utility and start it on Windows.
- Follow the few instructions and confirm the update at the end.
- Your computer will now update the BIOS. He will switch off and on several times. This is a normal part of the installation.
- Warning: Do not turn off your ThinkPad during the update or try to start it manually. Don't close it either. This can lead to data loss. The motherboard often has to be replaced afterwards as it has been damaged.
- Tip: Leave your ThinkPad in a safe place with the power adapter connected during the update.
- Your ThinkPad will load Windows after a maximum of three restarts and you can continue working as usual. The BIOS is updated.

If the utility does not work, you can download the BIOS directly from the same website.
- Check your current BIOS version beforehand and download the latest one accordingly. We show you how to check the current version here.
- After that, all you have to do is run the downloaded file. The program then does the rest on its own. But pay attention to the tips and warnings in the instructions above.
