Install and use Threema on Blackberry
This practical tip shows you how to install the Whatsapp alternative Threema on your Blackberry OS10 device.
Install Threema on the Blackberry - easily with the appropriate APK
There is currently no native Blackberry version of Threema. Nevertheless, you can also use Messenger with the top ratings in the area of data protection on your Blackberry Q5, Q10, Z10, Z30, Passport or Classic. Here's how:
- First, make sure that your Blackberry can also install apps that do not come from the Blackberry World. Read how to do this in the practical tip: Install Android apps on Blackberry
- You can download Threema's APK from the developer's website. It costs 2 CHF there (converted around 1.99 euros) - you can pay with Paypal or Bitcoin. After payment, you will receive a license key by email, which you enter on this page. With a click on "Download" you download the APK. Save this on your Blackberry device (eg under "Downloads").
- Use your file manager to navigate to the Threema APK and tap the icon. Now the installation starts, which you have to confirm again.
Use Threema on the Blackberry - how it works
Threema can be installed and used on the Blackberry, but is not explicitly designed for it. Therefore, there are a few things to keep in mind:
- You can only receive Threema messages if you keep the app open permanently in the background. And even then the push function does not work perfectly - the messages arrive every 15 minutes.
- Unfortunately, Threema is currently not fully integrated in the central Blackberry hub. This means that you can read messages within the hub, but you have to reply directly in the app.
- The Android app seems to still have some errors on the Blackberry devices. For example, users on the Internet complain about regular crashes. Umlauts in contacts should not always be displayed correctly. The QR scanner that you can use to add contacts in Threema also does not work correctly.
- According to the FAQ from Threema, no native Blackberry version of the messenger is currently planned (see screenshot).
