Create Threema backup - how it works
With the popular messenger Threema you can chat safely with your friends. For security, you can save your messages in a backup. So you can easily do all chats in case of problems
Create Threema backup on Android smartphones
- Open Threema and tap the three horizontal bars on the left.
- Select the entry "My backups" in the menu.
- If you have not yet backed up your ID, you must do so now. To do this, tap the "Export ID" button
- You will then be asked to enter a new password. Then click on "Next".
- Threema now creates your "ID Backup". You can write down the sequence of letters, send them by email or read them in with a QR code scanner. Be sure to keep the code!
- Then go back to the "My backups" menu.
- You can now create a new backup using the plus symbol.
- Enter a password and choose whether the media files should also be backed up.
- As soon as you tap "OK", Threema will create the backup.
Back up Threema messages on iOS devices
Back up your Threema ID on iOS devices in the same way as on Android smartphones. You are even better positioned when it comes to data backup:
- All messages and contacts are included in the standard iTunes or iCloud backup.
- Simply import the respective backup on your new iPhone or iPad to restore your Threema messages.
Restore old Threema backup
Threema saves the backup of your data as a ZIP file in the "Backup" subfolder of the Threema folder. You can find it in the main directory of your smartphone. It is best to save the archive on your computer.
- To restore the backed up data, copy the ZIP file into the named folder of the desired device.
- On the initial setup screen, tap "Recover" to retrieve your old messages. You can also enter your backup ID here.
- You cannot reset Threema using the settings.
