Thunderbird: memory full - what to do?
Programs like Thunderbird collect tons of data, so the memory is quickly full. We show you several ways to quickly free up storage space.
Here's what you can do: free up space on Thunderbird
With just a few clicks you can delete old emails in Thunderbird, for example, and thus free up memory. Note: This practical tip is based on Microsoft Windows 7 and Mozilla Thunderbird 31.1.1.
- Deleted mails end up in the trash. To empty it and gain memory, right-click on it and select "Empty Recycle Bin". Confirm with "Yes".
- This process can be automated if desired. To set this, right-click on your account and select "Server Settings" under the settings. Check the box next to "Empty trash when leaving". Confirm with a click on "OK".
- You can also clear the cache. Data is temporarily stored in the cache, but is no longer required. Switch to the settings and select "Network & Storage" under "Advanced". Click the "Clear Now" button to clean the cache.
- You can also compress folders to save space. To do this, switch to the "Network & storage space" settings as described above and tick "Compress all folders if this saves more space than". Here you can specify when the folders should be compressed. Click on "OK" to apply the settings.
