Thunderbird starts slowly - what to do?
If Thunderbird starts slowly, there can be several reasons. We'll show you how to solve the problem.
Thunderbird starts slowly: Check add-ons
In many cases, individual add-ons are to blame for the speed brake. These are not developed directly by Mozilla and are therefore in many cases not perfectly optimized for Thunderbird.
- Click on the menu button at the top right and select the "Add-Ons".
- In the "Extensions" category you can see all the installed add-ons. First deactivate all entries and restart Thunderbird.
- If Thunderbird suddenly gets faster again, gradually activate the add-ons to find the culprit.
- If you have found the culprit, uninstall the add-on and download it again. If there are still problems, you should look for an alternative.
Thunderbird starts very slowly - that can help
If the problem is not with the add-ons, Thunderbird can make you brisk again in other ways:
- Cache: Click on the menu button at the top right and select the "Settings". Go to the "Advanced" tab and select the "Network & Storage" category. Click on the "Empty now" button.
- Compress: Stay in the settings and activate the "Compress all folders" option here as well. This is how you reduce the memory that is accessed each time it is started.
- Mails: Click on the category "Account Settings" under "Tools" at the top of the menu bar and switch to "Server Settings" on the left. Activate the option "Clean the inbox when leaving".
- Reinstallation: If Thunderbird stays slow, you should reinstall the mail client. To do this, search for the tool in the Control Panel and "Programs and Features" from the list and click on "Uninstall". Before doing so, create a backup of your mails. Then download the latest setup file and reinstall the client.
