Thunderbird: Set up Web.de - how it works
Here we show you how to set up your Web.de account in Thunderbird in just a few steps, using either the IMAP or POP3 protocol.
Preparation: Allow external programs like Thunderbird for Web.de
So that you can access your emails with Thunderbird, you must first activate in your Web.de account that emails may be received and sent by external programs:
- Go to the website www.web.de and log in with your user name and password.
- Select "Settings" in the menu bar and then in the "E-Mail" area the item "To the settings".
- Click on "POP3 / IMAP Retrieval". Place a checkmark next to "Send and receive e-mails via an external program (Outlook, Thunderbird)" (see picture). You apply the change with the Save button.
Set up Web.de in Thunderbird
You can access your emails using both the IMAP and POP-3 protocols. If you want to know which method is more suitable for you, this comparison will help you. The procedure is identical in both cases except for one selection step:
- In the Thunderbird menu bar, click "File"> "New"> "Existing Account ..." to open the Account Assistant. If you don't see the menu bar, you can show it by right-clicking on the main toolbar.
- Enter your name, your Web.de address and the associated password in the appropriate fields. Then click Next". The correct settings are now automatically searched for in the Mozilla ISP database.
- To activate the IMAP protocol, select "IMAP". If you prefer the POP3 protocol, you must mark "POP3". Confirm your selection with the Finish button.
- Thunderbird now wants to add a security exception rule. Confirm this step to finish setting up your email account.
