Thyme gives many dishes their own unique taste - you can use other herbs as a substitute. Read here which herbs are best for this.
Thyme substitute oregano
If you have oregano in the house, you can use it to replace thyme (Thymus vulgaris) when cooking.
- The spices are closely related and are preferably used in Mediterranean cuisine.
- Both herbs give a dish a tart, aromatic taste. Replace thyme in the amount 1: 1 with oregano.
- Tip: These two herbs go well together in the garden or in the raised bed.
Marjoram as an alternative to Thymus vulgaris
In a Provencal blend of herbs you will find marjoram as well as thyme and oregano.
- In most cases, you can replace thyme quite well with marjoram in the amount 1: 1. Pizza is an exception. Marjoram does not taste so good here.
- If you use the thyme alternative marjoram to cook soup, you need a little more marjoram. Taste from time to time here from time to time.
Caraway seeds as a substitute for thyme
Thyme is not the same as thyme. There are many types that are suitable for cooking.
- If caraway thyme is required in the recipe, caraway is the best substitute.
- Caraway thyme is strongly reminiscent of caraway in its aroma.
- For this reason, you can just as well prepare the dish with caraway seeds. Use the same amount as for caraway thyme.
Fresh herbs are always more aromatic than dried ones. For example, you can freeze thyme and use it in portions if necessary. You can find out how in our next post.
