Time Machine: delete backup - how it works
You can use the Time Machine to create backups of your files quickly and easily under MacOS. However, you should delete old backups to make room.
How to delete Time Machine backups
If you want to delete individual backups of the Time Machine, it is not sufficient to move the data to the trash using the Finder. Instead, you have to do something else:
- Open the Time Machine using the program icon in the menu bar. All backups created so far will be displayed automatically.
- If you have created several backups, you will see a timeline on the right. Move the timeline to the desired backup.
- The backup to be deleted is now displayed first on the stack. Open the menu with the gear icon and click on "Delete backup".
- For security reasons you will be asked again if you really want to delete the backup. If you confirm with "OK", the prompt for the administrator password appears. Enter this and confirm again, the backup will be irrevocably deleted.
If you do not want to make space for backups on your computer from the start, you can use the Time Machine to create backups on a NAS.
