Tomatoes are one of the most popular foods. You can also dry the fruits - when dried, the fruity vegetables, which belong to the berry genus, also taste great.
How to dry your tomatoes
There are a few options for drying tomatoes. Which one you choose ultimately depends on how often you dry fruit and vegetables.
- Before drying the tomatoes, halve, quarter or sixth, depending on the type and size of the tomato. If necessary, remove the stalk.
- Then season the tomatoes with garlic or thyme, for example. You can also use a little salt. However, you should not season too much, as the taste intensifies during the drying process. If necessary, season the tomatoes a little later.
- The cheapest option is to air dry the tomatoes. However, this only works on really hot days. Find a sunny spot and don't forget to protect the fruit with a fly hood or something similar.
- Otherwise, of course, the oven also offers itself as a dryer. Place a little paper on the tray and then the tomatoes with the cut surface facing up.
- Set the oven to 100 degrees and top and bottom heat. To allow the moisture to escape, leave the oven door a little open. The vegetables should be dry after about six hours.
- If you dry fruit and vegetables more often, a dehydrator is worthwhile. This type of drying is by far the most convenient and the devices are not too expensive either - you have to expect an average of 50 euros. However, you should make sure that you take an automatic dehydrator with which the temperature can be adjusted. You can use the household appliance to dry a wide variety of foods.
- Tip: If you have different types of tomatoes that you want to dry, this is easily possible. However, you should cut the tomatoes into roughly equal pieces so that you get a somewhat identical result.
