The Charivari is a piece of jewelry that can be attached to traditional Bavarian costumes, i.e. dirndls and lederhosen. It is a chain with pendants. We explain in more detail what this is about in this article.
Charivari as part of the costume
Both men and women wear a charivari on their costume.
- For men it is a mostly silver chain with various pendants. It is worn as a jewelry chain on the bib of the lederhosen.
- Various types of pendants are attached to the chain. It can be coins, animal teeth or other. Those who adhere to tradition do not buy these trailers, they earn them, for example when hunting.
- Women also wear charivaris. These chains are usually attached to the bodice below the cleavage. In the meantime, some women also wear the charivari on their dirndl aprons.
- Talismans can also be attached to the version for women. However, silver pendants with natural motifs or hearts are common here.
- There are also women's chararias without talismans, these are made like a jewelry chain.
- In the areas of Bavaria, where traditional costume is particularly important, girls and boys are often given their charivari for confirmation. This way you can extend the chain in the course of your life.
- Inheritance of a charivari is also common.
