Bavarian hat: Gamsbart - meaning and information
A traditional Bavarian costume includes a traditional hat with a chamois beard. In this article we explain the importance of this accessory.
Bavarian hat - the meaning of the chamois beard
In many regions of Bavaria, but also in some areas in Austria, a chamois beard on a traditional hat is an absolutely common accessory.
- This tradition was created by Archduke Johann of Austria, who lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. He was a passionate chamois hunter, and the tuft of hair on the animal's hat was his hunting trophy, which he liked to display.
- Nowadays the chamois beards are not just made of gamshaar. Deer or badger hair is also used for hat decoration. However, a real chamois beard is still the preferred variant of the Bavarian or Austrian today.
- In a sense, the chamois beard is also a status symbol. The longer it is, the more valuable it is. The tuft on the traditional hat can cost several 1000 euros. The reason for this is that tying these accessories has become an art that has now become rare.
- By the way, every real chamois beard is entirely handmade.
- In the past, wealth and social standing were also expressed by the size and quality of the chamois beard.
- Incidentally, there is even a Gamsbart Olympiad: since 1960 the most beautiful chamois beards have been selected every two years. The competition is held alternately in Bavaria and Austria.
