Create TrueCrypt containers - how it works
If you want to save your data in a secured folder, you can create a container with TrueCrypt. We'll show you how it's done.
Create a TrueCrypt container
- Start TrueCrypt and click the "Create Volume" button approximately in the middle.
- Here, select the option "Create an encrypted file container" and click "Next".
- You can now choose between a "Standard TrueCrypt Volume" and the "Hidden TrueCrypt Volume". The hidden volume offers you an additional level of security if you are forced to give out the password. Unlike the standard volume, it cannot be enlarged afterwards.
- In the next step, choose a location for the container file. Type in the name you want below and click "Save".
- You can then choose an encryption method. Here we advise you on the popular and extremely safe "AES" variant.
- Now you can determine the size of the container. Simply type in the desired size in KByte, MByte or GByte.
- In the next step, use a password that is as secure as possible.
- Now move the mouse back and forth across the window for about 30 seconds. In this way, encryption can be created even more securely.
- When you click the "Format" button, the container file is created.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to enlarge a TrueCrypt container later.
