Change TrueCrypt password - how it works
The encryption tool Truecrypt also allows you to change the password of a volume afterwards. We show you what you have to do for it.
Change password in TrueCrypt
If you notice that your Truecrypt password is insecure or that you use it twice, you should change it. Fortunately, you don't have to re-encrypt the entire volume:
- Open Truecrypt and then press either "Mount Device" or "Mount File" - depending on whether you have encrypted an entire disk or just a file.
- The file manager opens, where you select the correct file or data medium. After you have confirmed with "Open", the path to the encrypted object is in the text field next to "Volume".
- Press "Volumes"> "Change Volume Password ...".
- In the "Current" area, write your previous password in the text field. In the "New" area below, enter your new password twice. You do not have to pay attention to the other parameters and can confirm with "OK".
- However, the length and quality of your password is important: You should definitely use upper and lower case letters as well as numbers and special characters.
Secure passwords are not only a must in Truecrpyt. We'll show you what to look for in a secure password.
