Truecrypt: Which hash algorithm is the safest?
There are three different hash algorithms available in TrueCrypt. We'll tell you which algorithm is the safest.
Truecrypt: Which hash algorithm is the best?
You are well served with each of the hash algorithms offered. If you are not very familiar with the subject, you can leave it at the default encryption.
- RIPEMD-160: The hash value here is 160 bits, which is significantly lower compared to the other two algorithms. In general, longer hash values also offer greater security.
- SHA-512: This algorithm comes directly from the NSA. The hash value is 512 bits. This makes SHA much safer than the other option.
- Whirlpool: This algorithm also has a hash value of 512 bits. It is as safe as the other two variants.
But not only the algorithm is decisive: We will tell you which TrueCrypt encryption is the most secure in the next practical tip.
