Trusted Installer - what is it?
The TrustedInstaller.exe process, also known as Windows Modules Installer, is a part of Microsoft Windows. The file is located in the C: \ Windows \ Servicing subdirectory. Among other things, the Trusted Installer is responsible for installing Windows updates and does not run permanently. However, various folders and files can be blocked by this process during runtime.
Unlock files blocked by Trusted Installer
First of all you should try to restart your computer or wait some time until the check for new Windows updates is finished. Alternatively, you have the option of stopping this process so that you can immediately access the files you want. To do this, proceed as follows and described in our picture gallery:
- Open the "Control Panel".
- Under the "System and Security" category, click the "Administrative Tools" folder.
- Click on the "Services" selection.
- Find the "Windows Modules Installer" service and double-click on the entry.
- Click the "Stop" button when the service is started.
- The service is stopped and you can now access the locked files again.
- If there are still problems, select the value "Deactivated" in the "Start type" selection field, confirm the setting with a click on the "Apply" button and restart the PC.
Important: Do not deactivate the Trusted Installer any longer
The Trusted Installer service primarily takes care of installing, modifying and removing Windows updates and optional components. If this service is turned off for a long time, errors may occur when installing or uninstalling Windows updates on the computer. Therefore, you should only deactivate this process while the file is being edited.
