TV displays: OLED, QLED, UHD, Ultra HD Premium, 4K, SUHD, HDR, HDR10, HDR10 +, Dolby Vision, Triluminos - these are the differences
There are differences in TV displays between OLED, QLED, UHD, Ultra HD, Premium, 4K, SUHD, HDR, HDR10, HDR10 +, Dolby Vision and Triluminos. In this practical tip, you can read about the details.
TV displays: that's behind the abbreviations
- UHD and 4K: These abbreviations are standard abbreviations for current TVs. They describe the high resolution of the screens, which ensures sharp images.
- HDR stands for "High Dynamic Range" and means that this technology provides higher-contrast images through deep black values and a higher display brightness and a wide color gamut. With HDR10, the number stands for the number of bits. Conventional televisions, on the other hand, have only 8 bits and can therefore only display 256 colors.
- Dolby Vision and HDR10 +: Dolby Vision is more or less a competing image format for HDR10 and provides more contrast, more brightness and more color gamut. However, this image format has an even higher level than HDR10. In order to be able to work better, HDR10 + was created, which works with dynamic values that can be better optimized. However, the devices for Dolby Vision are significantly more expensive.
- Ultra HD Premium guarantees you an Ultra HD standard with HDR10 playback mode. Such a television thus has a very high picture quality and a very high level. Only Dolby Vision and HDR10 + can exceed this.
- SUHD was once launched by Samsung to differentiate Samsung models from other UHD televisions. These devices have good brightness and a wide variety of colors. However, Samsung later decided to take a different route.
- QLED was this way from Samsung. The name comes from the technology: Quantum dots were installed here, which ensure high brightness and a wide range of colors. That's why Samsung chose this abbreviation.
- Super UHD: Not only Samsung can create a new term, but also the competitor LG. With this abbreviation, it advertises televisions that meet the HDR10 and the Dolby Vision standard. Note that it only applies to LG devices and is not a cross-manufacturer name. LG itself can determine which devices are considered "Super UHD".
Further explanations for TV displays
- Triluminos: Let's continue with Sony, who came up with this name. The designation stands for particularly colorful televisions from Sony. Quantum dot technology is also used here, which is why the image benefits enormously from the display.
- OLED: Organic LEDs provide the picture here. This means that every single pixel lights up for itself and thus makes backlighting, similar to that of LCD TVs, superfluous. OLED televisions provide impressive contrasts and good brightness. This technology also enables manufacturers to build extremely thin screens. Unfortunately, the technology is very expensive.
