Install Typo3 - how it works
In this practical tip, we will show you how to properly install Typo3.
1. Preparations for the Typo3 installation
Before you can start, you need the necessary software:
- To download the required files to your web server, you need the free software "WinSCP".
- The free tool "PuTTY" is suitable for fast SSH access.
- If you have downloaded the required software, you still need the current version of Tyop3.
2. Typo3: Upload installation files
After you have the software, you can upload the Typo3 installation package to your web server:
- Start WinSCP and log in with your FTP data.
- Load the installation package from Typo3 onto the server using "Drag & Drop" - usually into the directory with the name "html" or "httpdocs".
- When the upload is done, right click on the package. Select "User-defined commands" from the context menu and then "UnTar / GZip ..".
- You will be asked to select the path in which you want to unzip. It should be the same one that the package is in. You can copy it from the WinSCP address bar. Then confirm with "OK".
3. Set the necessary authorizations
In order for the installation to work properly, you must first set a few permissions:
- Mark the following directories and files: fileadmin, fileadmin / _temp_ /, fileadmin / user_uploads /, typo3 / ext /, typo3conf /, typo3conf / ext /, typo3conf / l10n /, typo3conf / localconf.php, typo3temp /, uploads /, uploads / media /, uploads / pics /, uploads / tf /
- Then right-click on one of the selected files or directories and select the "Properties" item.
- Enter the number "666" in the "Octal" field. Alternatively, you can also check the "W" box.
- The selected files and folders are now writable for the installation.
- Next you need to unlock the installer tool. To do this, create a file with the name "ENABLE_INSTALL_TOOL". Then move the file to the "typo3conf" directory.
4. Start the Typo3 installation
Now you can start with the actual installation of Typo3 on your web server:
- Switch to your browser and go to your website. The installation should now open.
- To start the installation, you have to enter the installation password. By default, this is "joh316".
- You will then be guided through the installation step by step.
