Install Ubuntu on USB stick - how it works
In this practical tip, we will show you how easy it is to install Ubuntu on a USB stick and what you need for it.
You need this for the Ubuntu installation
- For easy installation of the Linux operating system Ubuntu, you should install the free software "Linux Live USB Creator" on your Windows computer.
- Then of course you still need an ISO image from Ubuntu on your PC.
- Finally, you need a USB stick. If you use a CD image, it must have a storage capacity of at least 1 GB, for a DVD image you need 8 GB. Important: If there is data on the USB stick, back it up before use. The storage medium is formatted during the Ubuntu installation, so all data is deleted.
Ubuntu installation on USB stick - no problem thanks to software
The "Linux Live USB Creator" software installs Ubuntu on the USB stick for you. We will show you which settings you have to make.
- First connect the USB stick to your Windows computer. In Windows Explorer you can then check which drive letter has been assigned to the stick.
- Next start the "Linux Live USB Creator". Under "Step 1" you now select your USB stick with the assigned drive letter.
- In "Step 2" click on "ISO / IMG / ZIP". In the following selection window you navigate to the previously downloaded Ubuntu ISO image on your computer. The software checks the image, it may take a while.
- Under "Step 3" you can set the size of the persistence memory. Persistence storage refers to the storage capacity on the stick that is available in Ubuntu for your data and changes. Important: You have no access to the data in the persistence memory outside of Ubuntu.
- Now set the checkmark for "Format stick with FAT32" in "Step 4" and also remove the checkmark for "Allow LinuxLive start from Windows".
- Click on the lightning symbol to start installing Ubuntu on the USB stick. The software takes a few minutes for the formatting and Ubuntu installation to complete. You can then boot Ubuntu from your USB stick. However, you may have to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the USB stick comes first.
