Ubuntu no longer boots: "grub rescue" - fix the error
If you want to start Ubuntu and only "grub rescue" appears, that's annoying. There is probably an error with the boot manager Grub. We'll show you how to fix it.
Ubuntu: Create boot repair disk for grub-rescue errors
If you see the message "grub rescue>" instead of your normal boot screen, then there is probably a problem with the Grub 2 environment. Usually files or the like are missing. The Boot Repair Disk is the easiest way to fix this error.
- You probably can't use your computer right now. Therefore, use a replacement device for this section.
- Download the Boot Repair Disk.
- Run the file and follow the instructions. They help you to create a boot repair disk on an empty USB stick.
- Eject the stick and connect it to the faulty computer.
- Boot from the USB stick. If you have any problems with this, we will help you here.
Remove the faulty Grub installation from Ubuntu
- Select the option: "Recommended repair".
- The program will ask you to enter some commands into the terminal.
- Open the start menu, select Accessories> LXTerminal.
- Copy the specified commands line by line into the terminal. Execute each command with Enter.
- Select "Yes" when asked if you want to uninstall Grub. You will reinstall it in the next section.
- It can be a little strange to use the menu in the terminal. Note the repair carried out in the main window. The keyboard layouts are displayed there.
Reinstall Grub - no more rescue errors
- In the guided new installation, click on "Next" or "Forward".
- Now the command to reinstall is displayed. Copy this and execute it with Enter.
- You will now be asked to select the hard disk on which the boot manager should be installed. This should usually be the hard drive from which you are booting.
- Install Grub on the hard drive.

If you start the Boot Repair Disk with an internet connection, you will see a URL at the end. Write this down. It contains useful information about your system to help you get more help online.
