On Ubuntu, you can use the Samba program to share files with other users and computers. For example, pictures or videos can be shared on your home network. We explain how this works in this practical tip
Samba: Share files on Ubuntu - how it works
With just a few steps you can share any file or folder on your Ubuntu computer.
- First of all you have to download the Samba server and all other necessary packages. To do this, start the terminal with the key combination [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [T] and enter the following command:
- "sudo apt-get install samba-doc samba-doc-pdf tdb-tools"
- Now you need to set up access to guest shares. To do this, open the file under "etc / samba / smb.conf" with a text editor, for example gedit. Then set the following parameters as shown below:
- "guest ok = yes"; "public = yes"; "usershare allow guests = yes"; "map to guest = bad user"
- Now all you have to do is share files and folders. To do this, write the following lines at the end of the same file on one line at a time. Note that you have to enter the data of your own computer for the name of the share and the path:
- "[Share name]"
- "path = /PfadzumOrdner/Bilder/bild1.webp"
- "public = yes"
- "writeable = yes"
- This is how you determine what other users share and what folders and files are shared. The share is also public and guests can edit it. For each further release, leave one line free and insert the 4 lines again with a different name and path. You can now save and close the file.
- Finally, restart the Samba server with the "sudo service smbd restart" command. Then all changes are accepted and the releases are available.
- You can open your shares from other computers using your IP address followed by the name of the share. For example "\ 192.168.2.11 \ MeineBilder".
