Ubuntu: set up printer - how it works
This practical tip shows you how to set up your printer under Ubuntu. The user-friendly Linux version automatically installs most printer drivers as soon as you are connected to the Internet. We'll explain how to add, delete, and manage a printer.
Linux: Setting up printers on Ubuntu
By default, the Ubuntu operating system recognizes your printer. You set it up using the following steps.
- Connect the printer to your device via USB and start the printer.
- Open the system settings and navigate in the "Hardware" section to the "Printers" menu item.
- Choose "Add".
- Under "Devices" you will now find the exact name of your printer.
- Tap on "Next".
- Decide on the appropriate drivers from the database. If the correct drivers are not in it, download them from the manufacturer's website and select "Provide PPD file" instead of "Select driver from database".
- You can then change the printer name and description in Ubuntu.
- Confirm with "Apply".
- If necessary, select "Print test page".
Ubuntu: Set up and customize printers
You have now successfully installed your printer.
- In the system settings you will find your device under "Printer".
- If you want to remove the printer, right click on the name and select "Delete".
- You open the printer properties by right-clicking on the name and then selecting "Properties".
- In the menu that now opens, you can view the printer status and the print queue, release the printer and regulate the paper feed.
