In this practical tip, we explain how to partition a hard drive under the Linux distribution Ubuntu. This allows you to logically separate and back up the operating system and data on your computer.
How to partition your hard drive under Linux / Ubuntu
Before partitioning the hard drive, you should make sure that you have saved all important data. The next steps delete all of the content so that you can no longer access it. Then open the tool integrated in Ubuntu by tapping on the dash icon and entering "Drive management".
- In the "Storage"> "Local Storage" area, select the hard drive that you want to partition.
- Use the option in the "Data medium"> "Unmount data medium" area to ensure that the hard disk is no longer integrated.
- Click "Format Drive".
- You can choose between three schemes. As soon as you have selected one, a brief information about which systems the partitioning is compatible with appears.
- Tap "Format" and confirm that you really want to erase the hard drive.
- Click "Create Partition".
- Now determine the size of the partition, the file system and a name. The name may often not exceed 16 letters.
- Confirm and create additional partitions as required using the last two steps.
