Ubuntu: Encrypt hard drive - how it works
In this practical tip, we will show you how to encrypt your hard drive on Ubuntu. This protects you from your data being read unintentionally.
Preparation: The necessary tools to encrypt your hard drive under Ubuntu
First install cryptsetup. The package contains all the necessary files to encrypt your hard drive on Ubuntu.
- To do this, open a terminal.
- Now install the cryptsetup package. Enter the following command and confirm with Enter: sudo apt-get install cryptsetup.
- Enter your password.
- You can now close the terminal.
Encrypt hard drive on Ubuntu
- Open the menu and type the word "drives" in the search.
- Open the hard disk manager by clicking on drives.
- Select the hard drive on the left, for example the USB stick that you want to encrypt.
- Now click on the small gear in the right part of the window and select "Format partition".
- In the second drop-down menu, select the partition type "Encrypted, compatible with Linux systems".
- Enter a name for the partition.
- Choose a secure password and click "Format".
