Installing Ubuntu alongside Windows is not difficult. Basically, only two steps are necessary to set up the two operating systems in parallel. We'll show you how.
Install Ubuntu in addition to Windows: create installation medium
First you need an installation medium from which the installation can be started. You can do this either by CD or USB stick. However, due to the higher data transfer rate, we advise you to use a USB stick.
- Download the program Universal USB Installer.
- Also download the Ubuntu image as a 32-bit variant or as a 64-bit variant.
- Now start the Universal USB installer and select Ubuntu from the dropdown list. Then navigate to your downloaded image from Ubuntu and select the USB stick you want to use.
- The Universal USB installer now creates a bootable installation medium for Ubuntu.
Setting up Ubuntu next to Windows: The installation
Now you have to insert the USB stick or CD into your computer and restart. The installation runs mostly automatically and is intuitive.
- After rebooting, boot from the CD or USB stick and wait for the Linux installer to load.
- First choose your language.
- In the next window, click on "Install Ubuntu".
- Then select "Install Ubuntu next to Windows".
- In the upcoming window you should let Ubuntu create the partitions automatically and only set the size manually.
- Then Ubuntu will install itself. In the end, all you have to do is set a username and password.
- From now on you will get into the menu of "Grub" when you restart your PC. Here you can choose each time whether you want to start Ubuntu or Windows.
