On Ubuntu, you can share a folder on the network similar to Windows. However, this is not possible without additional aids. Our instructions will guide you through the individual steps.
Ubuntu: Install Samba for network sharing
To be able to share a folder in the network, you must first install the "samba" service from the official package sources on your computer:
- Therefore, open a terminal by right-clicking on the desktop and then selecting "Open Terminal".
- Now you have to bring your system up to date: First enter "sudo apt-get update" and then "sudo apt-get upgrade".
- Then you have to install Samba. To do this, enter the command "sudo apt-get install samba" into the console.
Ubuntu: Share folders on the network
After installing the service, you need to configure it for network sharing. With the sample configuration described here, you share a folder in which everyone in your network has read and write access:
- First save the standard configuration of samba with the command "sudo mv /etc/samba/smb.conf /etc/samba/smb.bak". The backup works well as a reference book because it is fairly well commented.
- The next step is to create a new configuration file with "sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf".
- Then add the following lines to the configuration. Replace the "|" characters with an [Enter].
- [global] | workgroup = smb | security = share | share modes = yes |
- [homes] | comment = Home Directories | browsable = no | read only = no | create mode = 0750 |
- [public] | path = "Specify the location of the folder here, such as: / media / storage /" | public = yes | writable = yes | comment = smb share | printable = no | guest ok = yes |
- Then save the configuration.
- Finally, you only have to restart the samba service with "/etc/init.d/samba restart".
- The network share can now be reached under "\\ YOUR IP address \ public".
