Ubuntu: Repair OS with on-board resources
If you have problems with your Linux operating system Ubuntu, there are a few ways to fix it with on-board tools. You can find a list with instructions in this practical tip.
Repair Ubuntu - Option 1: Operating system still starts
If your Ubuntu operating system is still starting, you can simply carry out the following steps for repair:
- Open the terminal by right-clicking on the desktop and then "Open Terminal".
- With the command "sudo update-grub", you can recreate the configuration file.
- If the problem persists, you should also reinstall your installed packages.
- First download the current package list with "sudo apt-get update".
- After the package list has been downloaded, install it with the command "sudo apt-get --reinstall install grub-common grub-efi-amd64 os-prober".
Repair Ubuntu: Operating system can no longer be started
If you no longer start Ubuntu, only a repair with the help of the live CD will help:
- Download the live CD - either 32 bit or 64 bit - from our website.
- Burn the CD to an appropriate blank and set your CD drive in the BIOS as the source for booting.
- Now start your PC from the CD.
- When your PC has started up, select "German" as the language and then "Try Ubuntu".
- After the PC has completely started up, you have to open the terminal.
- Mount your hard drive with "sudo mount / dev / sd .. / mnt". Replace the two points with the name of your drive. With "sudo fdisk -lu" you can display all drives.
- Finally, you have to distribute a few rights. To do this, enter the following command in the console and execute it: "sudo mount -o bind / dev / mnt / dev; sudo mount -o bind / sys / mnt / sys; sudo mount -t proc / proc / mnt / proc; sudo chroot / mnt / bin / bash; sudo cp / proc / mounts / mnt / etc / mtab "
- Now carry out the steps from the first paragraph for the repair.
