Ubuntu: Install programs via the terminal
Under Linux, you usually install new programs via the integrated terminal. In this article, we will show you how this works on Ubuntu.
Ubuntu: Install programs via the terminal
Ubuntu uses the package management system "Advanced Packaging Tool" (APT), with which you can install programs directly in the terminal. This eliminates the long search for the right files on the manufacturer's website. The package sources are also very secure and virus-free.
- Calling up the terminal: The easiest way to find the terminal is to search your computer for applications. To do this, right-click on the Ubuntu logo in the starter on the left and then on "Applications". Now enter "Terminal" in the search field. Alternatively, open the terminal using the key combination [CTRL] + [ALT] + [T].
- Search packages: In the console you get information about the packages and the sources with the command "apt-cache search" followed by the name of a program (eg the password management "keepass"). The terminal lists all packages found. The description is to the right of the package name.
- Install the program: If you have found the right package, install the program with the command "sudo apt-get install" followed by the name of the package (eg "keepass2"). Be sure to include the full package name. "Sudo" gives the package management system root rights. This is imperative so that changes can be made to the system. During the installation you have to enter your password and confirm the action with [J].
