Ubuntu: Uninstall programs - how it works
There are several ways to uninstall programs on Ubuntu. You can remove tools both via the terminal and via the software center. We explain how both ways work in our practical tip.
Ubunut-Linux: Remove the program from the software center
The advantage of the software center is clear, because it has a graphical user interface (GUI). This enables you to uninstall programs even if you do not like to work with the terminal.
- Go to the application menu on the left and select the "Software Center".
- Then click on "Installed software" in the program tab.
- The programs are sorted by categories, for example "games" or "graphics".
- Find the program you want to uninstall. Then click the "Uninstall" button.
- Finally, you only need to enter the root password and the program will be removed.
Uninstall programs on Ubuntu with the terminal
If you cannot find the program in the software center, you must remove it via the terminal:
- First open the terminal as usual.
- With the command "dpkg --list" you get a list of the installed packages.
- Note the package name here so that you can use it to uninstall the program.
- To only uninstall the program completely, enter the command "sudo apt-get --purge remove PROGRAMMNAME" in the terminal.
- With the command "sudo apt-get remove PROGRAMMNAME" the configuration files of the program are kept.
