Ubuntu: Format SD card - how it works
You can also format SD cards and other storage devices with the entry-level Linux Ubuntu. In this practical tip, we will show you how to do it.
Format SD card on Ubuntu
Since Ubuntu is an easy-to-use operating system, drive management is usually already available.
- Click the Ubuntu icon to open the application menu.
- Navigate here to "System"> "Drives" or "Settings"> "Drive management".
- Optional: If you do not have the program, you must first install "GParted" yourself. To do this, open the terminal and enter "sudo apt-get install gparted". Confirm with Enter and enter your password. The program should then be available.
- In the program window you will find a list of all connected drives on the left side.
- If you select a drive on the left, more information will appear on the right. Here you can also format it using the gear.
- For SD cards, you should select the FAT or FAT32 file system so that it can be read and written by all devices. After confirmation, the data carrier will be deleted and after formatting it will be attached to the system again.
