Ubuntu: Install and set up Spotify - how it works
There is also a desktop client for Spotify for Ubuntu. We'll show you how to install the program and how to stream music on your Linux system.
Install Spotify on Ubuntu Linux
These instructions refer to Ubuntu versions 14.04 and higher. Spotify is available as a third-party package for you:
- First open the terminal, it is required for all further steps. Since you need administrator rights for the installation, please have your root password ready.
- In order for the installation files that you download later to be checked, you must provide Ubuntu with a key for validation. Copy the following command (without quotation marks) into the terminal and confirm with Enter: "sudo apt-key adv --keyserver hkp: //keyserver.ubuntu.com: 80 --recv-keys BBEBDCB318AD50EC6865090613B00F1FD2C19886"
- Now you have to tell your system from which source it can get the Spotify installation files. You can do this with the command: "echo deb //repository.spotify.com stable non-free | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/spotify.list"
- Then update the list of known package sources with "sudo apt-get update".
- Start the actual installation with "sudo apt-get install spotify-client". Follow the instructions until the process is complete. You can then log in with your user data and the familiar graphical interface appears (see screenshot)
- Of course, something can always go wrong during or after installation. The Ubuntuusers wiki page provides solutions to many of the problems that typically arise.
