Ubuntu: Install language packs on Linux
This practical tip shows you how to install additional language packs on Ubuntu. If you did not select the appropriate language during installation, use the following instructions to set it up later.
How to install language packs on Linux / Ubuntu
If you want to work in different languages or want to set up a different standard language, the following steps will show you how to install language packs under Linux.
- Tap the small gear in the top left and choose "System Preferences".
- In the "Personal" area go to "Languages".
- Click on "Add / Remove Language ...".
- You now get an overview of the languages already installed. Ubuntu marks this with a small tick next to the entry.
- If you want to install additional language packs, check the languages you are looking for and confirm with "Apply changes".
- You will be asked for your password. The installer then downloads the necessary files.
Set language packs in Ubuntu
Linux does not automatically adopt the newly installed language.
- Tap the language in the "Language for menus and windows" menu, hold the mouse button down and drag it to the first position.
- Select "Apply system wide".
- Enter your password again.
- Log out and back in to activate the language packs.
The instructions refer to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Other distributions and versions may vary slightly. If you want to work with another language across systems, read another practical tip on how to change the language in Windows 7.
