Ubuntu: Install and set up Steam
You can now also use many Steam offers with Ubuntu. We'll show you how to properly install and set up the game platform.
Install Steam on Ubuntu - how it works in 10 steps
- Open the official Steam website with your browser. There click on the green button "Install Steam".
- This will start the download of the installation file ("steam_latest.deb"). Double-click the deb file once the launcher download is complete.
- The file then opens in the Ubuntu Software Center. Click on "Install" on the right side and confirm the action with your root password.
- You will then find a link to Steam in the list of your installed programs. If you use "Unity" as the desktop manager, press the Windows key and type "steam" into the search.
- After the start, a window opens in which you have to accept the current terms and conditions of Steam. Then a terminal window opens.
- First enter your root password there. You will then be asked if you want to download all files for Steam. Confirm this action by typing "Y" and pressing [Enter].
- When all the required packages have been downloaded, press [Enter] again.
- A Steam window will open, showing you the progress for downloading the latest updates. This process can take several minutes.
- When the process is complete, you will be taken to the login window. There you can either create a new Steam account or log in with your data.
- If one point of the installation does not work, you can find more tips on errors that can occur when setting up Steam in the Ubuntuusers wiki.
Steam on Ubuntu: tips after installation
- So that you don't have to search for Steam every time, you can also right-click the tool on the Unity launcher (see screenshot).
- There is not always enough space on the default partition for your game downloads. Under "Steam"> "Settings"> "Downloads" you can use the "Steam Library Folders" button to set a new place for your games - for example on an external hard drive or a larger partition.
So that security is not left out, we show you how to set up and use the Steam Mobile Authentificator.
