Ubuntu: upgrade from 12.04 to 13.04
There is an easy and better way to upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 to 13.04. We show you both options in this practical tip.
Variant 1: Ubuntu upgrade via the terminal
Here we show you the quick and easy way to install the update of the Linux software Ubuntu.
- Open the terminal with the key combination [CTRL] + [ALT] + [T].
- Enter the command line "sudo do-release-upgrade -d" in the terminal and confirm with your password and the Enter key. The new Ubuntu version will be found and installed automatically.
Variant 2: Adjust upgrade settings in the dash
If you go through the dash settings, the effort is somewhat greater. You can safely forget future updates - once configured, Ubuntu automatically informs you about upcoming updates.
- Click on the dash and check for updates.
- Clicking the software update icon opens a window. At the bottom left you will see a "Settings" button. Click on it.
- The "Updates" tab will take you next to "Notify me about new Ubuntu versions" at the bottom of the page. If you select "For each new version", you can specify what should be updated on your computer by ticking the box.
What you should consider when updating to Ubuntu 13.04
Updates are mostly for security, but you should still consider the following points before installing Ubuntu 13.04:
- As before every update, you should back up important data beforehand.
- Programs may not be running under the new Ubuntu version. Some software lags behind with the adjustment and is only available after a delay.
- You should skip beta and trial versions of Ubuntu and wait for the final version with the update.
