Open UDF file - how it works
You cannot open or edit UDF files with Windows standard tools. Instead, you need special programs. In this practical tip, we explain which they are and what the format is all about
How to open UDF files
The abbreviation "UDF" stands for Universal Disk Format. These files are images of optical data media such as CDs, DVDs or Blu-rays. The files are therefore comparable to ISO files. However, there are some differences: For example, there are no restrictions on the length of file names or the directory depth.
- To open UDF files you need a program that can handle the file format. A suitable software is "ISOBuster", which can be linked to the file format during installation if desired. You can then open UDF files with a simple double click.
- However, if you would like to call the UDF file via the "ISOBuster" program interface, you must change the file extension to "All files" in the selection dialog.
- Note that "ISOBuster" initially only lists the files and folders contained in the UDF file. Before you can use them, you must first unzip them to your hard drive. To do this, mark all files and folders, right-click on the selection and choose "Extract Objects" in the context menu.
In our next practical tip, we will explain how to convert UDF files into another format.
