UDIMM - what is it? Easily explained
In this article we will simply explain what UDIMM is and what it is used for. The word is an abbreviation for "Unregistered dual in-line memory module" and describes a type of RAM.
UDIMM - what is it exactly?
- UDIMM memory is normal memory and is mostly used in laptops or desktops. The "U" means that the main memory does not do any extra error correction.
- When your computer is running, errors occur during the transfer between the individual components. Today these are so few that no extra error correction is required in home PCs. So here it is no problem to install UDIMM memory without additional error correction.
- This error correction is required in the server area, because crashes are critical here. RDIMM was invented, which still has built-in error correction and is therefore particularly reliable.
- So there are UDIMM and RDIMM. UDIMM is cheaper to manufacture and faster, but not as reliable. RDIMM is more expensive and not as fast, but more reliable.
- This is how the difference between the different types of RAM came into being. UDIMM is definitely sufficient for you at home.
- By the way, UDIMM and RDIMM are the only two types of memory that can be mixed. So once you have UDIMM RAM and RDIMM RAM lying around, you can install both at the same time.
- Just keep in mind that the RDIMM's error correction will no longer work. It only works if you only have RDIMM and a compatible mainboard.
