Buy Ultra HD TVs - is it worth it?
Ultra HD televisions are on the rise. This practical tip will tell you whether it is worth buying one.
What is Ultra HD?
What exactly Ultra HD is can be summarized in a few points:
- Ultra High Definition, Ultra HD, is also called UHD or Ultra HDTV.
- "Ultra" is the resolution: Ultra HD includes 4k and 8k resolutions of 3840 × 2160 and 7680 × 4320 pixels. That is around four or eight times as many pixels as with conventional HD.
- Even for compressed video signals, up to 10 gigabits per second are transmitted. HDMI 2, DisplayPort 1.2 or a 100 Gbit / s Ethernet cable are required for these transmission speeds.
Target group for Ultra HD TVs
As with any purchase, you need to weigh what is important to you. You should consider the following five points:
- At the moment, the high price apparently speaks against the purchase of an Ultra HD television. However, since it may represent the state of the art for many years, such a television could be a more worthwhile investment in the long term than buying a simple HD device. In addition, the first devices are already available for less than € 1000.
- Ultra HD TVs are usually also compatible with lower resolution analog and digital content. Unfortunately, upscaling low-resolution content can lead to a visible loss of image and video quality.
- So far, no medium for ultra-HD films has been established. Therefore, little content is still available in this resolution. If the enormous resolution prevails, the market will certainly adapt rapidly.
- There are currently no game consoles on the market that offer Ultra HD quality resolution. However, the gaming market in particular likes to use the latest graphics developments. The next generation of consoles could already be Ultra HD capable.
- The spatial resolution of the eye is limited. The size of the screen and the distance to the device determine whether the higher resolution brings a noticeable improvement.
For whom it is worth buying an Ultra HD TV:
You have to decide whether an Ultra HD TV is right for you. Since UDHTV has not yet established itself and media and transmission standards first have to establish itself, there remains a level of uncertainty similar to that of VHS and Betamax or BluRay and HD DVD.
