Moving with a cat: This is how it works without any problems
When moving with a cat, you need to be patient so that your pet can survive the move. We'll tell you here what to look out for.
You should take this to heart when moving with your cat
Moving is very stressful for cats. Below you will learn how you can make the unpleasant situation as bearable as possible for your fur nose.
- Cats are creatures of habit. Therefore, put a lot of emphasis on familiar processes, even if you are stressed yourself. For example, don't neglect extensive pats or daily play.
- Try to take the move yourself so that the cat doesn't get infected by your stress.
- First, put away the things in boxes that are not interesting for your cat anyway.
- Leave favorite places, sleeping and feeding places until the very end.
- Do not wash all blankets and covers again before you bring them into the new apartment. Your cat will enjoy a familiar smell in the foreign environment.
- If you notice that your cat's stress is still too much, you can look for a way to temporarily accommodate her in a quiet place.
- This can be with friends, in a cat boarding house or in an empty room in your own apartment. It is important that the cat has her familiar objects such as scratching post, food bowl and the like with her.
- Don't bring your cat to the new apartment if you don't live there yourself.
Even after moving, your cat has to get used to it
You have left your old apartment, but the move is only half done. Now you have to set up in your new apartment and your fur nose has to get used to the foreign environment.
- Try to do any renovation and other hustle and bustle before you bring your cat into the new home.
- If this is not possible and your cat reacts negatively to the restlessness, bring it back to friends, in a cat boarding house or in a quiet room.
- This also means that your cat, for example, cannot injure itself on tools that are still lying around or smear fresh paint.
- First clear out the objects that are close to your cat's heart. So things like the cat tree, the loo, the favorite blanket, etc.
- Offer your cat many scratching options so that it can reduce stress.
- If your cat is unable to cope with the situation before or after the move, a tranquilizer from the veterinarian can also help.
- If your cat is a free litter, do not let them out for the first 3-4 weeks. First your cat has to get used to the home, otherwise there is a risk that it will not come back.
