Difference between data protection and data security - all information
Many people don't even know that there is a difference between data protection and data security. In fact, the two words describe completely different things. So that you know in the future, we will explain the difference here.
Difference between data protection and data security - that means data protection
Data protection is intended to protect people when processing their data. So this is primarily about laws and regulations and not about the technical aspects. To guarantee real data protection, three criteria must be met:
- The first criterion is protection against improper data processing. If your data is used, it may only be used for the intended purpose. For example, a registration office may not use your data for advertising.
- The second criterion is the right to informational self-determination. This means that you have control over your data at all times and must also be able to see it. A big issue today is whether the deletion of data is part of it.
- The third criterion is the protection of personal rights and privacy. Roughly speaking, this means that your data cannot simply be viewed by third parties and must be appropriate. For example, your health insurance company does not have to have any knowledge of your religious affiliation.
Difference between data protection and data security - this is how data security is defined
- Data security has the technical goal of protecting data from loss, manipulation and other threats.
- A whole series of measures are necessary to ensure data security. To protect against loss, for example, backups have to be made regularly.
- So that data cannot be manipulated, it must be protected from hackers. You also need an access control system. Only authorized persons can view and change your data.
- It is interesting that effective data protection is only possible with good data security. In this respect, the two terms are linked, even though they mean different things.
