Differences between Philips Ambilight and LED backlight
At first, the technologies "LED backlight" and "Ambilight" from Philips sound very similar. We explain the differences and show that they are different technologies.
That is behind the "LED backlight" technology
"LED backlight" and Philips "Ambilight" - both have something to do with light. However, that is the only thing in common. "LED backlight" ensures a better contrast ratio when viewing your TV and is very energy efficient. The black level is much better with "LED backlight" TVs, because small LEDs illuminate the screen.
- With "LED backlight", a distinction is made between two technologies: edge LED and direct LED. With Edge-LED, the LEDs are only on the edge of the TV and illuminate the picture from there. With direct LED, the backlight is area-wide.
- Edge LED TVs are a bit thinner than TVs with Direct LED, but they have a better picture.
- The TV sets are very sensitive and you should be careful when transporting them. The diodes can deform during transport. This can result in a "clouding effect" in Edge LED devices. If individual diodes are deformed, bright spots may appear on the screen. This does not happen so quickly with direct LED devices, as the LEDs are evenly distributed on the screen.
Philips Ambilight: luxury light for great effects
The Philips "Ambilight" has nothing in common with this screen technology. "Ambilight" is a technology developed by Philips and can only be found on Philips TVs.
- The Philips "Ambilight" extends the device field of view. The current color of the image is projected in real time by two, three or even four-sided light diodes.
- If your "Ambilight" TV is in front of a wall or is mounted on the wall, the effect is best seen.
- For example, if the color blue dominates on the left, red in the upper right corner and purple on the lower right, the colors are radiated outwards by the "Ambilight".
- This broadens the perception and the TV looks a bit bigger. This play of light is also very pleasant for the eyes. Even in complete darkness you can watch TV without any effort.
On the next page, we'll show you what you can do if your Philips TV breaks.
